Perfect for – An upscale experience in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains.

What was once a private mansion is now a luxurious boutique hotel. Plan a weekend of spa treatments and fine dining after roaming around the perfectly manicured gardens on this estate property.

Cozy Up in Cochrane

Location: Cochrane – 30 minutes northwest of Calgary

Perfect for – a unique staycation with sightseeing, shopping and strolls through a historic downtown.

Historic downtown Cochrane

First, book your stay at the historic Rockyview Hotel, which was built in 1904. Not only will you love the old-world charm, you’re smack dab in the middle of downtown.

Enjoy the very reasonable room rates and the fun balcony for all the guests to use.

Head to the Gentry for fancy coffee to start your day. Try the Goat’s Milk Caramel latte made with caramel from nearby Early Dawn Farm.

They serve up delicious vegan baked goods as well. Or for a more hearty breakfast, dine at Sunny Side Up in the historic downtown.

While you’re here, there’s great shopping in all the western-façade shops. If you love quaint little stores, Evexia has color-coded book shelves, cozy reading nooks and sells locally made products.

At some point on your trip, you have to grab a treat at famous McKay’s Ice Cream, and around the corner is the Vintage Verandah, one of the most beautiful antique stores.

For dinner, My Greek Plate offers an intimate dining experience topped with the sweetest staff.

Round out your getaway with a tour at the Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary, only 15 minutes outside of town. Here you can get up close and personal with the beautiful animals they’ve rescued.

Start with booking your stay at a riverside cottage, the ultimate secluded retreat.

From here, you’re close to tons of trails to explore the woodlands – try Brown Lowery Provincial Park for a quieter experience.

Or, explore the Bragg Creek area or the many trails just past Elbow Falls (also filming location for the Bourne Legacy).

Speaking of Bragg Creek – there are some cute shops, cafes and restaurants to explore for an afternoon.

The Bragg Creek Cafe and Baking Co is one of my favorite – try to time your visit on a Sunday for ‘sweet bun Sunday’ where they whip up surprise types of cinnamon buns and other sweet treats.

Plus this is the least busy time to visit the town- a perfect quiet morning with your honey.

Book a tour and tasting at the nearby Spirit Hills Honey Winery and try their flagship dandelion wine! Made with – you guessed it – petals from dandelions grown around the property and only using honey as the fermentable yeast.

Not only is the wine great, the winery is located on a beautiful rural property. And I believe they do tours year round!

Sylvan Lake A-Frame Cabin – Image from VRBO

The most adorable cabin you can rent in Sylvan Lake (or all of Alberta, actually) is this cozy A-frame.

With a fireplace to warm up around after a day of skating and ice fishing, or a balcony to watch the early summer sunrise, it’s the perfect weekend escape any time of year.

It’s only half a block from the beach, and walking distance to all the restaurants and shops, meaning you can leave your car and not worry about parking.

This is one of the most popular cabin rentals in Alberta right now, so book your stay ahead of time if you can!

If you can’t get a spot at the A-Frame cabin, this one is another good choice:

Then, cozy up by the fire pit, enjoy the huge patio, share a bottle of wine and stargaze.

Do you love rural Alberta, old buildings and ghost towns? Grab a copy of the newly released Abandoned Alberta – a book of stunning images and stories of left-behind places.

Now, there are a few popular places for romantic getaways in Alberta that I left off this list. The Chateau Lake Louise is a top choice for many, as it’s a Fairmont property you know that you’ll be pampered during your entire stay.

Plus, waking up to a brilliant turquoise lake tucked in between the mountains will melt anyone’s heart. But it’s very pricey.

Lake Louise from above

Spending a romantic weekend in Banff can be lovely, but with so many hotels to choose from, it can be hard to plan a perfect holiday with no one else to distract you.

A weekend in the Canadian Rockies (especially Banff National Park) can be expensive, so I think that you’ll find that most of these hidden gems in Alberta have a similar appeal to a mountain getaway.

You’re guaranteed to rekindle a little romance at any of these places that made the list!
