Move over craft breweries, Alberta’s wine tourism scene is budding in popularity due to its unique wine-based experiences all over the province.
You don’t have to travel to the Okanagan Valley for a fancy wine vacation – you can sip and savor a perfect pinot here in wild rose country.
Alberta might be the last place you think about when it comes to wine tastings and vineyard tours, but it’s time to think again. Alberta’s wine tourism industry is blossoming.
This wine-themed itinerary will take you through most of Alberta – but you can choose to do parts of this route as a day trip from Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer or Lethbridge.
Along the way, you’ll stop at wineries for tastings and tours, visit a spa with wine-based spa treatments, visit trendy wine bars and stop at some adorable rural farms and greenhouses.
This Alberta wine tour itinerary starts from the Edmonton-area, but you can also follow it in reverse order, depending where you want to start from.

Day 1: Edmonton’s Countryside
Barr Estate Winery – Sherwood Park
In Edmonton’s countryside lies Barr Estate Winery, a rustically quaint organic fruit winery with a unique product.
Stop by for a tour and sample the tart, yet smooth white wine made from rhubarb.
The picturesque farm setting provides the perfect afternoon out on a fresh summer day.
Optional: Vicky’s Bistro and Wine Bar
Head 12 minutes into Sherwood Park for dinner at Vicky’s – a posh spot for wine and small bites.
It’s everything you want in a wine bar – red seating, dim lights, smooth music, charcuterie boards and a hard-to-choose from wine list.
My recommendation? Try the wine flight which comes with 8 wines!
Stay Overnight at: The Dragonfly Inn
Sip a glass (or bottle) of wine on the 1800 square foot patio, and enjoy the hot tub and cedar sauna.

Day 2: Red Deer to the Alberta Foothills
Solorzano Spa, Cafe and Wine Bar – Red Deer
This is no ordinary spa. A historic home built in 1906 has been converted to the most adorable day spa with an onsite cafe, wine bar and gorgeous patio.
Book a ‘vino therapy’ spa package, and choose from wine-based spa treatments including a merlot pedicure.
Enjoy 1.5 hours of bliss with your besties, where you’ll not only sip wine, but soak your feet in it too!
Lunch at Field & Forge Gastropub – Innisfail
Now, I know it’s not wine focused, but rural Alberta has so many impressive craft breweries that I couldn’t not visit one on this trip.
Not only is the beer list pretty extensive, they’ve got ciders, wines and mimosas available too.
It’s an open concept brewery so the restaurant portion is kind of right in the middle of it, and you definitely can smell the yeast and mash magic happening, which I think is pretty cool and provides an immersive experience.
Stop in for a late brunch or lunch, and hit the patio if it’s a sunny day. If not, the inside of the restaurant is a cool mix of industrial and rural Alberta.
Wine Tour & Tasting at Fallentimber Meadery
Tucked away in a primitive forested area, visiting Fallentimber Meadery feels like a secret country getaway.
There’s a large yard and picnic tables, so pack a cooler and plan to eat a late lunch here if you decided to skip Field and Forge.
Fallentimber produces some really creative and unique drinks here, so I recommend you do both the tour and the tasting to get the full history and experience.
If you’re not the biggest fan of beer or wine, this the Meadery you want to visit.
In addition to their mead wines, they’ve created sparkling meads. These taste more like mimosas and mojitos and are easy drinking!
Stay Overnight at: Azuridge Hotel – Priddis
This is one of Canada’s only estate hotels.
This ultra-private property offers a luxurious getaway experience.
Each room comes with butler service, a welcome drink and a morning tray of goodies.
Treat yourselves to a locally sources dinner at the Opal Dining room, and watch the sun set over the ridge from the patio or the floor to ceiling windows.
Stay an extra day to wander the hiking trails on the property, be pampered at the onsite spa, or golf at nearby courses.

Day 3: Country Delights & Wine
Brunch at Priddis View & Brew Bistro
Continue with wide open scenery and tranquility by visiting the Priddis View & Brew – a classic country home converted to a bistro.
The warm hospitality here reminded me of coming to visit my grandmother for a hearty and home cooked meal.
Spirit Hills Flower Winery – Millarville
Spirit Hills is a flower winery in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, family owned and operated with a lineage of French winemakers and vineyards that still exist in France today.
Stop in for a tour, where you’ll feel like you’ve been transported to an old-world rustic french winery somewhere in Bordeaux.
The wine making style is like nothing else you’ll find in the world – instead of sugars from grapes, they use sugar from honey and flower nectar.
This is most notable in their flagship wine, the Dande, made from the delicate petals of hand picked dandelions.
The tour is worthwhile, as you’ll learn about the vital role of bees and wildflowers in not only wine production, but much of our food as well.
As you learn about the delicate process of honey extraction and fermentation you’ll come to have a much better appreciation for dandelions!
Because these wines are made with honey, wildflowers and berries like black currants and saskatoons, on average there are 100 times more antioxidants compared to red grape wines.
And since the wine is made from honey from honey harvested from flowers that surround the region, each glass of wine is like tasting the Alberta Rocky Mountain Foothills.
Inside tip – if you’re a fan of the hit tv show Heartland, plan to take a side trip and tour through the Millarville area. This is where a lot of the show was filmed! Some noteworthy stops are the church and the race track.
Chinook Honey Company & Chinook Arch Meadery
25 minutes east along Highway 7 you’ll arrive at Chinook Honey Company & Chinook Arch Meadery.
Stop in for a wine tasting or purchase a bottle of wine and charcuterie board to savor on their scenic patio.
Plan to spend some time in the boutique shop, where you’ll find every type of product made from honey. Including local ice cream!
Stay overnight at: Misty Ridge Retreat B&B
This affordable bed & breakfast is located just outside of town, overlooking the foothills for a quiet and relaxing stay.

Day 4: Rural Roads and Treats
Coffee and Breakfast at 94 Take the Cake – Okotoks
This is the cutest and most unique coffee shop you’ll ever visit!
Located in a historic residential neighborhood, you’ll want to get your camera ready for this one.
The entire shop is like walking into a black & white 2D comic book and is the most interesting optical illusion.
You just have to see it for yourself. Not only is the décor unique, the treats are scrumptious and ever-changing.

Field Stone Fruit Wines
Field Stone Fruit Wines was Alberta’s first ever estate winery.
Here you’ll find wines made from raspberries, strawberries, wild black cherries, black currants, red cherries and saskatoon berries, with at least three quarters of the fruit used being from their own farm.
Call ahead to book a tour and tasting at this winery in the prairies.
Lunch at Cousins Country Kitchen
Travel one hour north on Highway 21 to Country Cousins Restaurant for pulled pork or smoked brisket on homemade buns, or their most popular menu item – peanut butter pie.
Wine Tour at DNA Gardens
Continue north to DNA Gardens and the onsite Delidais Estate Winery.
This fruit orchard, farm store and patio café offers something for everyone.
Roam the property’s hiking trails, go fruit picking, or have lunch and a glass of wine in the covered garden patio.
Stay Overnight at: the Rustic Retreat in Pine Lake
End your road trip lakeside, watching the sun set from your patio on a warm summer evening. If it’s chilly, cozy up by the fire table!
